What's New - The 1901 Census On 2 January 2002 the 1901 census return for England and Wales became available to the general public for the first time. The information contained in the census will be very useful for many people who are researching their family history, as ages, birthplaces and family relationships are all recorded. This latest release will be different from previous returns, which are freely available to consult on microfilm. The 1901 census has been digitally scanned and fully indexed. The indexes will be available online but, in order to recoup the cost of the scanning and indexing processes, there will be a charge to see full details of any individual's entry - or to download an extract from the original census return. There may be problems with this system, especially for people who are unfamiliar with the internet. A particular disadvantage is for those searching for an individual with few definite details to work with. It may be necessary to look up many possible individuals located in the index - and this will be expensive in terms of money as well as time. When the system first went live the massive demand caused the system to overload, and there were severe problems in accessing the census data for several months. Happily, everything is now working smoothly and this vital information is freely available. Our experience in using the indexes mean that we understand their complexities, and can maximise the chances of a successful search.
