Historical Research Although we are based near the National Archives, and conduct the mujority of our research there, it is often necessary for us to visit other repositories, to obtain additional information. Our experience enables us to identify projects where this is the case, and advise clients on the most time-efficient way to proceed. Examples of these other repositories are shown below. In the field of army records, the National Army Museum holds an impressive collection of books, including a comprehensive series of regimental histories, and photographs of uniforms and equipment. The Imperial War Museum concentrates on the recent history of the army and, in addition to their library, provides access to a large collection of photographs relating to all aspects of the armed forces. Additional records relating to the sea are also spread widely throughout London. The National Maritime Museum in Greenwich holds a sample of crew agreements relating to merchant ships, survey reports which provide details of the ships themselves, and copies of applications for certificates of service, applied for by Master Mariners. The Guildhall Library keeps the Captains Registers, as compiled by Lloyds of London, which contain career histories of merchant Captains. The India Office Library, which has recently moved to the new site of the British Library at St Pancras, contains the surviving archives of the East India Company, and the India Office. These include registers of baptisms, marriages and burials which occurred in India, and records of the Indian Army and civil service. Other historic documents are held locally, at the network of County Record Offices in Great Britain, including parish records detailing births, marriages and deaths prior to the introduction of civil registration in 1837. Our countrywide network of researchers allows us to access original documents at most of these offices.
